Beginning Marriage: The Illusion of Cohabitation The Reality of Homebuilding

Marriage is the relationship toward which most of us direct our social and emotional interests. A good marriage brings ultimate intimacy through intense, united "homebuilding," and this is so despite the fact that some commentators view marriage, the family, and its traditional roles in general as threatening lo identify and individual happiness. Cohabitalion means merely living together without investing in the relationship and can apply to both married and unmarried people.

The institutions of marriage and the family, including the extended family, are the schools of intimacy—from kindergarten lo graduate school.

Marriage and the family involve challenging relationships requiring strong identifies, clear roles, and extensive relationship skills. These relationships cannot be discarded without serious consequences and cam; major responsibilities, yet can be remarkably rewarding.

Among various illusions about marriage are: (1) marriage itself is to blame for relationship problems; (2) there is rarely a happy marriage; (3) fulfillment can be found primarily outside the family; and (4) only inadequate persons would devote their best efforts lo home responsibilities.
